It might look like something out of a sci-fi movie, but a Dutch engineering firm has successfully created a “smart highway” with glow-in-the-dark roads. The smart highway was demoed on 500 meters of road in the Netherlands last week, and showed promise for expanding the use of technology to other areas.
Beyond just looking awesome, the roads will make driving at night safer, while also eliminating (or at least, greatly reducing) the need for streetlights.
According to IFLScience,
The road markings are made with paint containing photo-luminescent powder that charges in the daytime and then releases a green glow at nighttime… “It’s almost radioactive.”
